Mixed media artist Uzi Sabah (Montevideo, 1970) combines music and video all across his work. For every project he digs up memories, taking on the role of ‘found footage archeologist.’ His works soon become dreamlike collages reflective of times, societies, religions, and cultures past. In antique fairs or flea markets, Sabah searches for vintage film stock and materials he then uses as the foundation to build his pieces. The analog is made new again, resulting in compelling short films and installations: music videos, slideshows, sculptures, and live performances—these are some of the ways in which his artistic process is made manifest. Sabah’s oeuvre is closely linked to his own identity: his life experiences as an Uruguayan-Israeli living in NY & LA nonlinearly inform his creation. He currently resides in LA’s Echo Park neighborhood, from where he continues to research and admire the mixing of cultures.
Sabah’s past video work in the music underground scene includes collaborations with bands like Astroboy, Cursi, Elefante, and Perdedores (Uy)—as well as Extramay (UK), La Foca, and Maxi Trusso (Arg). In addition, he has been part of experimental lo-fi pop act Steve Austin Astronauta since 2002, as well as audiovisual collage collective Perdedores (Uy) since 2005.
He has taught adult & children workshops on image and sound integration at Centro Cultural España, Fundaciòn de Arte Contemporáneo (FAC), as well as Plataforma, a program developed by Uruguay’s National Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC)
